That gut feeling is real. It's your enteric nervous system, the dense web of neurons lining your digestive tract, communicating with your brain in ways scientists are only beginning to fully map.
Now watch a child with autism flap their hands, stare at their fingers while wiggling them back and forth, rock in place, or line up toy cars in the exact same order for the hundredth time. Parents are often told this is "just a quirk" — or worse, that it needs to be stopped and disciplined out of the child. But there are two very real, science-backed stories happening here, and they are not the same story, even though they both start with the word "gut."
